In West Africa, gold wasn't currency. It was language. And it said exactly one thing.

The Akan people of Ghana built one of the most sophisticated gold cultures in human history. Gold was the material of chiefs and warriors - worn not to show wealth but to communicate divine connection. Black and gold together held specific meaning - the earth and the sun, the permanent and the powerful. Akan goldsmiths were among the most skilled craftsmen of the ancient world. They didn't make jewellery. They made statements.

FAQS

What is tungsten carbide?

Tungsten carbide is a compound of tungsten and carbon, originally developed for industrial cutting tools and aerospace components. It rates 9 to 9.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond, and significantly harder than gold, silver, titanium or stainless steel. For rings, this means a surface that resists scratching under virtually any daily wear condition. It also carries real weight on the finger - denser than gold, heavier than titanium. Zokk rings are made from tungsten carbide because it's the hardest wearable metal on earth.

Is tungsten better than gold for a ring?

Tungsten and gold serve different purposes. Tungsten carbide is significantly harder than gold, rated 9 on the Mohs scale compared to gold's 2.5 to 3. A tungsten ring will not scratch under daily wear. A gold ring will show scratches and requires regular polishing and maintenance. Tungsten also costs a fraction of what gold costs while looking equally premium. The tradeoff is that tungsten cannot be resized once made, whereas gold can. If you want a ring that looks great permanently without maintenance, tungsten is the stronger choice. If you want a ring that can be resized over time, gold has the advantage.

Is tungsten better than silver for a ring?

For daily wear, yes. Silver is a soft metal, it scratches easily, tarnishes over time, and requires regular cleaning and polishing to maintain its appearance. Tungsten carbide is substantially harder than silver and will not scratch, tarnish or fade under normal daily wear. Silver has a long history as a jewellery metal and carries genuine warmth and character, but for a ring worn every day on an active hand, tungsten outperforms silver on durability by a significant margin. Zokk's Monument collection achieves the silver aesthetic in tungsten carbide, the look of silver with none of the maintenance.

Are tungsten rings safe to wear?

Yes. Tungsten carbide contains no nickel and no harmful compounds. It is hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin, often recommended by medical professionals for men with metal allergies. A common concern is whether tungsten rings can be removed in an emergency. They can. Tungsten rings cannot be cut with standard ring cutters, but medical professionals remove them using vice grip pliers or a ring cracker tool, the same method used for titanium and ceramic rings. Emergency rooms carry these tools as standard equipment.

Can a tungsten ring be resized?

No, and it's worth knowing before you buy. Tungsten cannot be resized once made. This is why Zokk offers made-to-order sizing for every ring and offers a ring sizer to anyone who wants to confirm their size first. When between two sizes, always size up.

What is a paua shell ring?

Paua is a species of abalone found exclusively on the coastlines of New Zealand. Its shell produces a distinctive iridescent pattern, shifting between blue, green, purple and pink depending on the light and angle. Paua shell has been used in Maori art and craft for centuries, appearing in carvings, ceremonial objects and jewellery as a material that carries cultural and spiritual significance. Zokk's paua shell rings, the Rau and the Ta, set genuine New Zealand paua shell into tungsten carbide. No two paua inlays are identical. The pattern and colour shift is unique to each ring.
